In Mannar city proper, there are still some points of interest. It shouldn't take you 3 days to see them, as it did for me--it might take you two hours if you dawdle.

You can check out temples. I think this one is from Thallaimannar, actually.
There's a baobob that was said to have been planted by Arab traders in the 1400s. At 19m wide, it's the fattest tree in Sri Lanka, and you can actually walk there from the bus stop.
And a sunset with oddly-colored sea clouds.
