There's a temple you can visit on your way to the next town from Matale. It's called Nalanda (say NAWlanda). It doesn't merit staying over night in Matale, because you can reach it from there if you take a bus.
It's located near a reservoir, and it's a nice place to spend an afternoon.
You have to go the last couple of kilometers on foot--they say it's 1 km, but you and me know better. You get to pass through some truly lovely real-estate.
Then the road dead-ends into the temple:

Views of the temple. It's supposed to have depictions of sex acts on it, but I didn't see anything resembling that.

It's an active temple, so you still have to take off your shoes and stuff.
